What should have been a packed programme of games including championships in Europe, Oceania, Middle East Africa and the Americas, was reduced to a single game in September because of travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Even that game was the subject of three short-notice changes of venue.

Danny Kazandjian, secretary general of IRL, praised both nations for their effort and commitment, saying, “The huge logistical effort that went into the staging of this one game must be recognised and due thanks given to the players, administrators and match officials. On behalf of the whole IRL community I want express our gratitude and admiration to NRLB and NRLD, and both of their teams on and off the field.

“We all had such high hopes for the widest ranging calendar of events ever with games planned at male, female, wheelchair and youth level – all of which came to nought. We now look forward to 2021 with anticipation and excitement. There will be the possibility of games all around the world and then completed by what promises to be the biggest and best world cup ever.

“In closing, I would also like to pass on my congratulations to Joran Schoenmaker on his man of the match performance in the Netherlands’ narrow victory.”
