Match Preview: Germany and Malta open European Championships C on Saturday 3rd October in Hattingen

Germany and Malta have named their 19-man squads for the opening match of the 2026 European Championships as they face each other tomorrow (Saturday) in Euro C at Sportsplatz Welper, Hattingen (kick off 2pm local time).

It promises to be an intriguing match up, with the hosts promoted from last year’s Euro D against the nation relegated from Euro B. A good crowd is also expected with the fixture being played on Reunification Day, a public holiday in Germany.

Germany come in on the back of last month’s 28-14 away win against neighbours Netherlands in the Griffin Cup, with head coach Bob Doughton potentially handing Exiles’ Arron Williams a debut. As with all European Championships games this year, each nation must name 12 players from their domestic competition in their squad.

Doughton, commented: “There is a high degree of excitement amongst our squad about playing in Euro C. For the majority of our players it will be the first time at this level. We are under no illusions that it is going to be a tough match, both physically and mentally.”

Malta, who have included experienced campaigner Jarrod Sammut, have selected six potential debutants with Mark Friel, Chris Keating, Sam Khalifeh, Harold Sammut, Tomas Strickland and Willem Willemse all named. Mark Robertson will jet in from Perth, Australia for the fixture.

“Preparation for this camp has been very positive,” claimed Knights’ head coach, Kane Dimech. “There's been a lot of youth added domestically to help set the foundations for years to come, not just this comp. While last year was a disappointing championship for us, it taught us a lot about where we are as a team and where we need to progress.

“Tomas Strickland despite being uncapped, has led from the front, and a special mention to Anthony Micallef who stepped back from MRL after around 20 years of being its heart and soul. He has definitely left some big shoes to fill within the newly constructed backroom staff.”

Match Report: Malta edge Germany 28-29 in Round 1 Euro C thriller!

A Jarrod Sammut drop goal three minutes from time saw Malta triumph 29-28 over Germany in the opening game of Euro C, at Sportsplatz Welper, Hattingen. Knights’ fullback Zarrin Galea led the way with a hat trick to complete the comeback after the hosts had led 28-12 at the start of the second half.

“We knew that Germany would be physical and that the demands of our own middles would be what would give us a platform for a win,” said Malta head coach Kaine Dimech. “The heart and desire from our guys were incredible. Germany really dug in and made it an incredible watch, but we managed to own those crucial moments. It could have gone either way, the guys put a lot of pride and honour into the shirt.”

Germany scrum half Jimmy Adams opened the scoring in the fourth minute, Josh Gatt levelling for the visitors, the home side then taking control in front of a vibrant crowd. Jay Kay scored out wide and back rower Shaun Smith crossed for two tries in five minutes.

Galea’s first touchdown kept Malta in contention, only 22-12 down at the break. Josh McConnell’s try edged Germany further ahead, Felix Rau with his third goal, but from there on in it was all Malta. Galea again narrowed the gap and debutant Tomas Strickland’s 50th minute try and a Sammut goal brought them back to within a score.

Galea completed his treble on the hour to level matters but Sammut pushed the conversion attempt wide before stepping up to claim the crucial one-pointer.

Germany head coach, Bob Doughton, commented: “It’s been a great day with over 500 fans in attendance who were enthralled with the occasion. Credit to Malta for keeping at it. I warned our guys that if we switched off that they would pick us off and that’s what happened, we’ve learned a lot today.”

Malta can secure the Euro C title a win over Greece next weekend in Marsa.
