Match Preview: Netherlands and Scotland Women Name Squads Ahead Of Saturday's Clash

Netherlands women will meet Scotland for the first time in a senior women’s international for world ranking points on Saturday 17 October at Castricum Rugby Club (kick off 2pm, local time).

The game will be Netherlands’ seventh match and head coach Brett Davidson has named a new look squad with seven potential debutants - Ciska Brabec, Maaike Burger, Stephanie Elmers, Lieve Gerritsen, Joy Kleen, Aïcha Willems and Noa de Wit – while former captain Vera van der Zwan moves into the assistant coach role.

“Having Vera come from captaining the team from the very beginning to now moving into the coaching staff has been amazing,” said Davidson. “Her knowledge of the game is excellent and having her still leading the team from the coaches’ box is exciting, the calming experience she brings to the debutants is priceless.”

Hiske Blom – one of four players who gained experience at Rochdale Hornets last season alongside Lisa Berding, Fiona Kalf and Eva Peroti - is named as the new skipper.

Scotland have called up Featherstone’s Bella Kendrick Naylor, Chloe Newbigging from Manchester Swinton Lionesses and St Helens’ Luci McColm into their squad for their fifth match.

Scotland women’s head coach, Ady Picton, noted: “We look forward to facing The Netherlands for the first time. We were a little disappointed with a few things in the game against Canada, but we’ve reflected and worked hard as a group since.

“They’re a bit of an unknown quantity but we’re expecting a tough game. We’ve brought in some new faces and have a couple of players returning to the squad so we’re excited to see them play and really looking forward to the game.”

Match Report: Scotland women keep a clean sheet as they win 0-54 in the Netherlands

Scotland’s women ran up a big score in the Netherlands while Jamaica’s Women Reggae Warriors gained their first-ever victory, away in Greece, in senior internationals for world ranking points.

Fullback Becky Smart ran in three tries and kicked seven goals as Scotland triumphed 54-0 in Castricum.

The visitors crossed ten times in all, comprehensively ahead 38-0 at the break. Scotland women’s head coach, Ady Picton, commented: “Netherlands have been fantastic hosts and put together a great day. Everything came off for us, we were really good, we’ve had some great sessions together and that work showed. Netherlands dug in and gave us a real test in the second half.”

Sammi Simpson, Eve Tonkin - with the first of her brace - and Smart all crossed inside the opening quarter hour to establish a lead the Scots never looked like losing and they raced in for seven touchdowns in the opening period.

Netherlands found their feet in the second half, but their lack of overall game time and rugby league experience showed.

“We are proud of the effort,” said new Netherlands assistant coach Vera van der Zwan. “After a tough first half, to show this kind of attitude shows how coachable this group is, keeping in mind lots just played there first game of league.”
