Match Preview: Italy look to seal Euro D title as they prepare to host Czechia

Italy will seal the men’s Euro D title, and promotion back to Euro C, if they can overcome Czechia tomorrow (Saturday) at Stadio Giovanni Invernizzi, Abbiategrasso (kick off 3pm, local time).

The Azzurri won in Norway last weekend and are looking to build on that triumph back at home. “The 40-6 victory against Norway is a significant result, rewarding the hard work done by the squad and their desire to best represent the colours. The team showed character, discipline and the ability to play together, but we know there is still room for improvement,” said Italy coach Elio Giacoma.

“Now we must turn the page and focus on the Czech Republic. A different match awaits us, one to be faced with the same determination and great respect for our opponent. We want to build on the good things we did in Norway and continue our growth process. Playing at home will be an important opportunity to prove the value of this group in front of our own crowd.”

Czechia enter the competition for 2026 with a full domestic squad, and will have three potential debutants on view; Tomas Moravek, Tomas Perlik, and Filip Kaska.

Player/coach Jakub Hudrlík, commented: “We are really looking forward to the game. We want to put into practice everything we have worked on in our preparation and build on the experience we have gained from our previous matches. We are well aware of Italy’s result in Norway which shows the quality they have. We know it will be a tough challenge, but that is exactly the kind of game we want to play.”

Match Report: Italy Takes Euro D title after defeating Czechia 46-38

A blistering five tries from centre Sam Elrick Ngeng saw Italy seal the men’s Euro D title, and promotion back to Euro C, with a 46-38 win over Czechia at Stadio Giovanni Invernizzi, Abbiategrasso in Milano province.

“We struggled to find our way, it wasn’t not possible for us to complete sets because of credit to the opposition,” said Italy head coach Elio Giacoma. “They were so physical and dictated the speed of the game, credit to them, but a shout to our boys because they stuck to the task. We completed our goal and that’s the most important fact.”

In an end-to-end contest, there was little between the sides throughout, Italy holding a narrow two point lead at the break. Tomas Adamec, Jan Chuchlik and Matej Schejbal all posted try doubles for the visitors, Adamec finishing with 18 points.

Czechia player/coach, Jakub Hudrlík, noted: “We had some expectation based on our last results, so we wanted to give our heart in the match. We were able to keep up to Italy and I am really proud of our team. It was one of the best games we ever played and I’m really looking forward to play against Norway next week.”
