Match Preview: Norway and Italy name squads ahead of Saturday's Euro D opener

Norway and Italy will meet for the first time in a senior men’s international, when they open Euro Championship D on Saturday 17 October at the ØsterHus Arena in Sandnes (3pm kick off, local time).

The entire Norway squad is picked from their domestic competition with the host club, Sandes Raiders, providing nine players, Farsund veteran Kristoffer Milligan again captaining the side.

"We have promoted six players who played in this year’s European U19s Championships demonstrating that our youth pathway is working and helping us to build in the long term,” stated Norway head coach, Tim Jones.

“We'll be looking to build on our new culture, standards and expectations. It is so important to face international opposition in this competition to encourage more people in Norway to take up the sport.”

Italy will be looking make amends for two losses in last year’s Euro C competition which saw them relegated, and the Azzurri pick a new-look squad which is drawn from across Europe while also containing the mandatory 12 domestic player spots.

Italy men’s head coach, Leo Epifania, said: “An important moment awaits Italian Rugby League. We have worked hard to arrive at these fixtures with a team that is aware of its qualities but above all with the desire to keep growing.

“The trip to Norway will be a challenging test. What I have asked from the boys is intensity, discipline and, most importantly, to play together. We want to represent the nation with pride and show that the Italian movement has enthusiasm, quality and ambition.”

England’s Carl Hughes takes charge of the fixture.

Match Report: Italy get off to winning Euro D start with 6-40 win against Norway in Sandnes

Impressive Italy got back to winning ways as they won the opening Euro D encounter against Norway in Sandnes despite significant travel disruption. Fifteen of their squad were 12 hours late leaving, only arriving in Sandnes on the morning of the game having been forced to stay overnight in Oslo.

It didn’t affect the Azzurri, however, who were 24-0 up at the break, backrower Santino Decaro with two of their tries as the visitors attacked principally down the left edge using their pace and size to advantage. “It was a positive effort, especially having had such a long journey with cancelled flights and 15 hours in the airport,” said Italy men’s head coach, Gioele Celerino.

“It was a very good game, we were dominant throughout and defended very well. We have plenty to work on, but I am pleased with the positive effort.”

Simone Ngeng also crossed for two tries in between being sinbinned for a professional foul. Norway were also down to 12 men when Kevin Batnes was yellow carded just before half time for a dangerous tackle but they hold on during that period, their score a late consolation from exciting scrum half Joshua Silverstone-Utheim.

Norway head coach, Tim Jones, noted: “It was a great tough, physical international where the score didn't reflect the true game. As we grew in confidence, we asked the Italians questions but some errors and their excellent defence kept us out.

“I was very happy with the pack who fought hard, Nils Holte was our man of the match with his strong carries and some big hits in defence. The home fans enjoyed the effort and made some fantastic noise which was greatly appreciated by the players and staff.”
