Match Preview: Scotland women prepare for home debut as Canada aim to take third Celtic scalp

Scotland’s women will make history when they play their first-ever home game as they face Canada at Hawick tomorrow (Saturday) in a senior international for world ranking points (kick off 1pm, local time).

It will be Scotland’s fourth competitive game after away encounters in Las Vegas earlier this year, when they beat USA, and Jamaica and Wales in 2025. Huddersfield Giants duo Caitlin Cox and Ellie Garside join the Royal Navy’s Rachel Marley and Workington Town’s Kacey Currie with an opportunity to make their debuts, and Emma Welsford continues to captain the hosts.

“We look forward to welcoming Canada in what will be a historic day for women’s rugby league in Scotland,” said Welsford. “They got a great result against Wales last weekend and we only lost narrowly to the same opponents last year, so we’re expecting a tough, close game.

“We have lost a couple of key players in the last fortnight to injury and suspension, but we are more than confident in the ability of the girls coming in and excited to get out there in front of our own fans.”

The Ravens opened their two-match European tour with an impressive 14-0 whitewash of Wales in Neath last weekend, and will be looking to claim their third consecutive Celtic scalp having also beaten Ireland to third place in the IRL Women’s Rugby League World Series in Toronto late last year.

Megan Pakulis will earn her 15th cap, if selected, while Larae Benoit will be hoping to make a full appearance after being named 18th player last weekend. Canada women’s head coach, Matty Barron, commented: “Coming off a strong test against Wales, we’re excited for another opportunity to challenge ourselves in Scotland. Every match is a chance to build towards the 2030 Rugby League World Cup for us.

“We’re also proud to play our part in supporting the continued growth of Scotland’s women’s programme. These fixtures help strengthen the global game and create valuable opportunities for both nations to continue to raise the overall standard.”

England’s Tyler Topping will take charge of the fixture.

Match Report: Canada Women triumph 4-34 over Scotland in Hawick

Canada’s women completed their European tour with a 34-4 win over Scotland women at Hawick, in a match for world ranking points. The Ravens again dominated defensively, conceding only one try over their two matches.

Centre Maddy Aberg posted a brace as Canada ran in seven tries. “I’m very pleased with the result,” said Ravens’ head coach Matty Barron. “Maddy was outstanding and Tamisha Toussaint came off the bench in the middle to give us some much needed go forward and physicality.

“The tour has been very useful for us in that we needed to continue the momentum we built at World Series as we look to improve our rankings. It also gave us chance to identify new players from our provincial pathways and test them at this level. We would certainly love to test ourselves against France and England, our players would relish the opportunity.”

Scotland – in their first home game - led initially, winger Caitlin Cox opening the scoring as the hosts moved the ball right, Enya Lackie firing the final pass.

Dani Franada responded shortly afterwards with a clever kick into the in-goal which she chased and grounded, Cassie Mann denied a further Canada score moments later when she knocked on with the line open.

Franada’s perfectly weighted kick to the corner was scooped up by Erkia Scott, Petra Woods finding space on the left edge to move Canada further ahead and into a 14-4 half time lead.

Eight minutes after the break, Aberg went through two defenders as she took Natasha Naismith’s short pass and just after the hour, Ravens skipper Megan Pakulis wriggled her way out of a tackle to ground the ball to the left of the posts.

With ten minutes to go, Aberg jinked and weaved through the Scottish defence to add her second and Gabrielle Hindley barged her way over with three minutes remaining, Naismith adding her third conversion.

Scotland women’s assistant coach, Gareth Nicholson, said:  “We’re obviously disappointed with the result but can’t fault the girls’ efforts. We made too many errors which gave Canada opportunities and they punished us.

“They’re a really good side with a lot of experience. For us, it’s important to remember that this is only our fifth match as nation, and we’ve won two of the four capped games. We’ve only been running 18 months so whilst disappointed, we’re not too downhearted. This is only the start of our journey.”
