New constitution approved for USARL

The United States Association of Rugby League has approved a new constitution prior to the 2023 season.

The move paves the way for all interested clubs and leagues to apply for membership, which will be vetted by the Transition Commission, including Americas Rugby League Regional Manager Romeo Monteith, on behalf of the IRL, that was formed in June 2022.

The new constitution is based on the results of a wide-ranging reform process that started in late 2021 following an agreement between the governing body and International Rugby League to review the governance structure of the game in the world’s largest sports market.

The reform included a detailed consultation with almost 30 stakeholders across all levels of the game in the United States and analysis of other American national federations.

In the new structure, eligible clubs and leagues that participate in organised competitions this season will be responsible for electing a Board after all 2023 championships have been completed.

The new Board will replace the current USARL Board and will initially consist of up to nine directors: seven nominated by the clubs and leagues; and one female and one male Director drawn from the players and the other individual members. That group will then have the opportunity to recruit up to three independent directors.

Americas Rugby League Regional Manager, Romeo Monteith, said: "The adoption of the new constitution is a pivotal moment for the game in the USA. We look forward to the participation of Clubs, Leagues and individuals in the new governance process."
