Media Statement

Rugby League Ireland (RLI) has been fined £4100 for a breach of International Rugby League (IRL) eligibility rules. The regulatory breach occurred in arrangements for the recent senior international match between Wales and Ireland on 17 October. There is no suggestion that Ireland fielded ineligible players in the match.

IRL places the highest priority on the integrity of senior international matches and all the rules are in place to protect that integrity.

RLI has agreed that its processes to confirm eligibility did not function in this case, it has accepted the outcome and is taking the required steps to rectify the problems encountered. IRL accepts that there was no malicious intent behind these breaches and has confidence that, with the support provided, the process will run smoothly in future.
