Davy Mucowintore is a Burundi Rugby League Local Hero

Match officials are not always recognized for their importance to a sport however Burundi Rugby League has recognized Davy Mucowintore by announcing that he is, officially, their Local Hero for 2020.

Davy is more than just a referee he is an advisor to his whole community – always on hand to lend an ear to the members of his club and provide support for anyone who needs help.

He provides care and support for new members and established members demonstrating that winning and losing is a team game – enjoyed or endured together.

Davy has been a part of the growth of rugby league in Burundi that now has over 350 members and is going from strength to strength. As the President of Ntahangwa Rugby League, Davy has taken coaching qualifications to help to grow his club and is now preparing to become a match official educator, a vital role in any sports organization.

Jean du Christ Rusiga, President of Burundi Rugby League fully supports Davy’s recognition as a Local Hero saying, “I have worked on this project with Davy since 2015. He has worked on his club, his coaching and now his refereeing. He shows support and compassion for everyone. It was a pleasure to see him officiate at the MEA Championship in Lagos – he certainly is our Local Hero”
