Brazil announces the start of wheelchair rugby league championship

Brazil has signalled its intention to become a force in Wheelchair Rugby League, setting a date for its first national championship in the modality in December.

Furthermore, the emerging nation has enlisted the expertise of brothers Carlos and Marcelo Kamarowski, widely-respected pioneers across multiple wheelchair sports.

They will be at the forefront when the inaugural Brazilian wheelchair rugby league championship is held in Curitiba on December 18.

“It’s a form of rugby league I find very exciting and central to our vision of making rugby league inclusive to everybody,” Brazil Rugby League Chief Operating Officer Hugo Fróes said.

“We’re very fortunate to have the Kamarowski brothers lending their services, and the enthusiasm they bring is matched entirely by our executive committee.

“Anybody who has watched wheelchair rugby league or tried to play it can only marvel at the speed and intensity of the game.

“We signalled our intent almost two years ago to launch a wheelchair competition, but only now that vaccinations against COVID-19 have risen, are we able to plan something with certainty.”

The addition signals the start of a big 12 months for Brazil Rugby League, with the national female outdoor team to contest the Rugby League World Cup in England, and the men’s outdoor team to play in the South American Championship in Colombia.
