Germany celebrate milestone with first international in Poland

Poland and Germany will compete for the second ‘Augustus the Strong’ trophy in Nowe Skalmierzyce on Saturday in a senior men’s international for world ranking points (kick off 2pm local time).

The sides met last year in Berlin where Germany were 54-10 winners to take the silverware named after the former King of Poland and Elector of Saxony who was famed for his ability bend horseshoes with his hands.

Poland have just completed their domestic season, with seven players in line to make their debut.

“We look forward to welcoming Germany, we know they will be determined to hold onto the Augustus cup. We are looking forward to another fixture which provides the Polish players with an opportunity to put into practice everything we covered in the recent training camp," Poland coach Dean Reacher said:

Poland are next scheduled to travel to Czechia on 19 October.

Germany will potentially hand out eight debuts as they field a squad entirely based on their domestic competition for what will be their 40th senior international.

NRLD president, Bob Doughton, commented: “We fully expect the Polish team to be stronger this time around and we know that we are in for a hard match. This will be our first-ever game in Poland and is the 40th international which Rugby League Deutschland has played and we’re very excited to celebrate both milestones.“

'We made strides': Poland show improvement in loss to Germany

Germany retained the “Augustus The Strong” trophy with an emphatic 58-18 win in a men’s senior international for world ranking points in Nowe Skalmierzyce, Poland. Centre Linus Kurz, on debut, and Trouts teammate, scrum half Harry Miles, shared the honours with four tries apiece.

NRLD president, Bob Doughton, commented: “We were really pleased with our performance and the manner and spirit in which the game was played. It was a good run out and I was happy with some of the rugby we played. We are looking forward to showing a similar hospitality to Poland when they visit Berlin next year for the next instalment.”

Eryk Wiśniewski got Poland on the board just before half time to make it 22-6 at the break, and they had the satisfaction of scoring the final try by Mateusz Kłosiński.

Poland men’s head coach, Dean Reacher, said: “We thank Germany for their historic visit here and I was really impressed with both teams – we made strides forward despite the final scoreline. I was pleased with our effort, and we’ve seen improvements. Hopefully we will show more of that when we face Czechia.”
